This program launched in the spring of 2009 for 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. About 10 YDO students meet weekly on Wednesdays at Cambridge College to explore weather patterns, climate, ocean tides, marine life, and how to read nautical charts, taking a sailing voyage across the open seas within the unlimited confines of their imaginations. Additionally, they learn math skills involved in course charting and risk assessment. Jon Schwartz (below), who also instructs YDO’s Math Games Program on Wednesday afternoons, developed this curriculum based on students’ interest in the ocean. In the past, students went on a group outing to Newburyport, where they toured the local marina and spent time viewing ships in the harbor.
