A growing group of YDO students in high school are considering their next steps. The first class at Lawrence High’s exam school, Abbott Lawrence Academy (ALA), is in its senior year. The Lawrence school system is emerging from receivership with new student support programs it must maintain and improve. To meet these multiple needs, YDO has introduced a college-success effort, led by Kurt Thiede, a 40-year veteran of higher education administration.
Class of 2019 Pathways Kickoff Meeting
Postsecondary Pathways is designed to support students in educational pursuits best suited to their skills and goals. The program is underway with 32 seniors. Throughout the 2018/19 school year, YDO will support Pathways’ inaugural class; serve an increased number of upperclassmen; and collaborate with other local organizations to more effectively support the postsecondary success of Lawrence youth.
Concurrent to the delivery of Pathways at ALA, the director and YDO’s executive director are working with business, community, and school leaders to vet and plan the foundation of this eventual city-wide initiative. We are also leveraging YDO’s partnership with Phillips Academy to bring the Tang Institute’s Learning Disposition curriculum to Lawrence to help students adopt a “growth mindset.”
